Our Curriculum
Science
At Oldfield, Science is taught as a distinct subject and meaningfully linked to our thematic curriculum and outdoor learning where appropriate. We aim to spark children’s curiosity and excitement about the world around them, encouraging them to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop a deeper understanding of natural phenomena.
Children learn about a wide range of topics including plants, animals (including humans), materials, seasonal changes, habitats, light, forces, sound, and electricity. Our well-equipped Forest School and outdoor spaces play a key role in supporting scientific enquiry through hands-on, experiential learning.
Science teaching is engaging, practical, and inquiry-based. Pupils develop key skills such as observing, predicting, testing, measuring, and drawing conclusions. Scientific vocabulary is built progressively across year groups, and children are encouraged to work scientifically by planning and conducting investigations, using equipment safely, and communicating their findings clearly.
Continuity and progression are ensured through our carefully planned curriculum, including a rolling programme for mixed-age classes. In the Early Years, science is delivered through the EYFS curriculum under ‘Understanding the World’, supporting early scientific thinking through play, exploration, and adult-guided learning.
